THE PROCESS FOR A BILL TO BECOME LAW IN FLORIDA
First, bills have to be introduced. Then the Senate President and House Speaker, with concurrence of committee chairs, refer the bills to one or more committees. Leadership and committee chairs then decide whether to “agenda” or hold hearings on the bills. That’s where YOU COME IN. Frequently, if the House in particular does not agenda a hearing, the Senate does not hold a hearing either. Bills not heard “die in committee”, a horrible death by silence. If heard, the ERA bills will pass as we/your Alliance has built a wide cosponsorship among both Republican and Democratic legislators. The Senate Judiciary Committee has heard and passed the ERA bill twice. IT IS THE HOUSE SPEAKER LARRY CRETUL who needs to be persuaded to HEAR THE ERA BILL. That’s why we urge you and your membership to SEND LARGE NUMBERS OF POSTCARDS IMMEDIATELY TO HOUSE SPEAKER CRETUL (LARRY CRETUL, DOYLE CONNER BUILDING, 1911 SW 34 ST., GAINESVILLE FL 32608, or phone 352 955-6407. Urge him to "HOLD HEARINGS ON THE ERA EARLY MARCH!"). You need to get his attention to ERA. Alliance reimburses costs at RatifyERA@cs.com. HOW TO CONTACT YOUR OWN FLORIDA REPRESENTIVE AND SENATOR about supporting the ERA
ERA bills are filed every year by their Sponsors. The rest of the House and Senate is urged to “co-sponsor and vote for the ERA bills” by Equal Rights Alliance/us and others—more importantly, YOU, their bosses who vote them in or out. Search your representative and your senator in the list below. If you don’t see her/him, send an e-mail to urge her/him to “co-sponsor and vote for the ERA bill” before the Florida legislature.
To find out who your Florida representative and senator are, click www.myfloridahouse.gov/Sections/Representatives/representatives.aspx, for Florida representatives. You’ll need to know your own zip code + 4-digit extension to find your representative. To find what your full zip code is, click ZIP+4 Lookup Service. Zip codes for post office boxes are not available.
